Pages for Visual Catalogues
Why
do I need Internet Explorer 5 or 6 installed
The interface for
v|c data entry modules (Lite, Pro & Enterprise) and the v|c
Windows Viewer that you ship with your finished catalogue on CD, use
controls from Internet Explorer (5.x or 6.x). IE has to be loaded for
these controls to be available to the software both when catalogues
are created, and to allow these file formats to be accessed by users
you ship your catalogue to that want to run the v|c Windows viewer. |

Q1. Why?
A. 1.
this method allows catalogues on CD Rom to be viewed by end users who
have IE installed without installation (setup.exe). Note that
for users who do not have IE installed, and do not wish to install
it, or who are running under other operating systems such as Unix or
Apple Mac, catalogues can be viewed using the v|c Java viewer from
their Java enabled web browser. The v|c java viewer will run
catalogue from a CD as well as over the Internet.
A 2. Having
the latest version of Internet Explorer (currently IE6) will also
ensure that the end user will have the most up-to-date HTML viewer
and MPG (movie) viewer available. See Q3 below.
Q2. Which
controls from Internet Explorer are used ?
A. The
controls used by the Windows based version of the visual|catalogues
interface are the HTML control (for displaying web pages) and the
Active Movie Control (for viewing .avi and
.mpg movie formats, and for playing audio .wav
files).
Q3. Why are
these controls not incorporated into the software ?
A. While it
would have been possible to include most of these software components
in the software, the .mpg (animation) and .HTML (web page) and
particularly the Java programming language definitions, are
moving targets. They are under review and development
year by year with new features in HTML, new .mpg movie formats and
extended Java definitions being introduced. We felt that Microsoft
are most likely to keep up with these changes, allowing users of the
v|c system to catalogue and view the most recent formats of these
file types.
